Ideas for remote teambuilding

Hello everyone, I’m Hélène Renaud and you’re listening to Inside Comm’.

2020, as we all know, is a moment in time where innovation and creativity will have proven a real asset!

This applies to both professional and personal life… For example, we all remember the wonderful skill many of us gained baking home-made bread in March/April 😉

In our professional lives, we need to reinvent ourselves to continue collaborating in the best possible way. This includes enjoyable times spent together, an essential aspect of company life…

We’ve somehow managed to replace our famous chats at the coffee machine with weekly Teams coffees. But what will become of our annual team-building sessions?

These moments have been opportunities for discussing key topics, integrating new staff, collectively reflecting on new strategies, directions and, above all, deepening relationships between colleagues. All these activities are more important than ever in a crisis and transformation scenario!

It’s not about getting rid of them to the detriment of the corporate culture and social bonds, but rather adapting them without making the mistake of transposing what was happening in-person into the virtual world.

Here are 5 ideas for organising a good inter-team activity

#1 Online board game

I’ll start by suggesting you play an online board game.

You know Pictionary no doubt. The concept is simple: a person gets a word that others have to guess, and tries to draw it with their mouse on a virtual whiteboard. The other players see the drawing in real time and can write suggestions in a chat. When a person types the right word, that person wins the round!

Another option is to play the famous Werewolf role-playing game as a team… You know the game where you’re plunged at night into a village plagued by werewolves… it’s up to you to defend your camp! Go to wolfy.fr if you’re game!

#2 Music quiz

Another idea is to organise a music quiz.

Each colleague connects to an online platform like massivemusicquiz.com, and has a go at the awesome blind-tests!

#3 Cooking together

The idea is simple. Choose a recipe everyone agrees on, try it out all together via video, then enjoy tasting it!

If you’d simply rather enjoy a small shared dish as a team, I suggest placing an order on the Foodiz Delivery website. The same lunch or breakfast will then be delivered at the same time so you can chat about how it tasted and what you liked most. You can check out this new concept at Foodiz.be.

#4 Virtual yoga sessions

Just like cooking, a yoga workshop can also be a relaxing team-building activity after a busy day’s work! Simply log on to the same YouTube channel to enjoy a group programme! Motivation in a group is always better than alone! Even remotely!

#5 Escape game

The escape game is a popular activity used by companies for productive team-building. They like it because it helps foster team spirit between colleagues. Unfortunately, lockdown makes it difficult to organise in real life. But there’s a virtual alternative at Happykits.fr.

While team-building exercises may have also been an opportunity for sharing the company’s vision and strategy, be careful not to mix usefulness and enjoyment in this new world.

If you look at team-building as a time for human sharing, a time for pleasure (perhaps rewarding or recognising the work accomplished) and also a time for sharing more official information, you need to separate these 3 objectives, and combine them a different way!

Do you want to delve deeper into these topics of human relationship development? Then we’ll come back to them in a future episode!

Thank you for listening and see you soon!
